Historical Information

Below is some information about some of Thomas and Ida Dalton's ancestors. Hopefully we can add to this over time.

Richard Rowell - Our first ancestor in Australia?

Ida’s grandfather Richard Rowell arrived in Australia at the age of 29.

Richard was illiterate, so his name is spelt by various officials first as Rowell, then at one stage as Raoul, then, finally, Rolls.

A farm labourer, he was tried in Harford, Bedfordshire, England and sentenced to 10 years for ‘highway robbery’ and transported to Tasmania.

More to follow shortly…

James Rolls: Missing in action

James Rolls was Ida’s brother.

We didn’t know anything about him until the Australian War Memorial (AWM) contacted Irene Darby (nee Connor) seeking her mitochondrial DNA to test against some soldiers’ remains from WW1 that had been found in France.

Irene matched with their mystery soldier and, later, she and other relatives travelled to France for his re-interment at the War Cemetery near Bullecourt.

These are the documents the War Memorial provided to Irene.
